The rule
Tall describes height — how far something extends upward (people, animals, buildings, trees). Long describes length — how far something extends horizontally, or duration of time.
Quick tip
Ask yourself: does it go UP? → tall. Does it go ACROSS or take TIME? → long.

✓ “She is very tall.”
✓ “It was a long meeting.”
Common mistake
✗ “My hair is tall.”
✗ “The table is tall. (when you mean its length)”
